Dear Friends,
At this time of year churches hold Harvest Festivals to celebrate crops being gathered in from the fields and were traditionally held at the end of September to coincide with the autumn new moon. Harvest Festival is celebrated around the world and is a good opportunity to thank farmers and farm workers who work so hard on the land and at sea. The first ever Harvest Festival was held in a small church in Morwenstow, Cornwall, in 1843. Reverend Robert Hawker invited his parishioners to a special service of thanksgiving and praise. Victorian Hymns such as ‘We plough the fields and scatter’ and ‘All things bright and beautiful’ helped to popularise the idea of Harvest Festival and spread the annual custom of decorating the church with home grown produce and flowers. Harvest Festival reminds Christians of all the good things God gives us, and encourages us to share with others in need. Harvest time is also a good time for us to reflect and to be thankful for the food we have, and to think of those around the world who are hungry. Thank you to all who generously donated food for the Cambridge Foodbank at our recent Harvest Festival Service in September and to all the children and staff at Dry Drayton Primary School who were in the church this morning for their joyful celebrations.
I hope you have a wonderful October!
